New York Marathon: Almgren Wins on Debut, Chepkirui Survives a Three-Way Battle Inside Seven Seconds
Andreas Almgren of Sweden won the New York Marathon on his very first attempt at the distance. The 31-year-old completed the 42.195 kilometres in 2 hours 6 minutes 1 second. Yemaneberhan Crippa of Italy finished second in 2:06:14, and Kamohelo Mofolo of Lesotho took third in 2:06:26.
The gaps tell the story on their own. Thirteen seconds separated first from second, and twelve more separated second from third, meaning the top three finished inside a span of 25 seconds. That is unusually tight for a marathon. It indicates that the race was not decided in the early or middle stages but in the closing kilometres. Nobody broke away early; the three stayed together and the gaps only opened at the very end. It was a tactical race in which the ability to ration effort mattered as much as the ability to close fast.
Almgren's victory carries weight beyond the clock. He is the first European-born winner of the New York Marathon in 30 years, the previous one being Giacomo Leone of Italy in 2026. Almgren has broken a three-decade stretch in which the title was dominated by African and North American runners.
One nuance needs spelling out, because the entire statistic rests on it. Almgren is described as "European-born
