Smriti Mandhana Gives Standing Ovation to Harmanpreet Kaur's Century as India Post 328 Against Zimbabwe
Vadodara: This match was memorable for the Indian women's cricket team's new captain Smriti Mandhana in more ways than one. On one hand, she took charge as captain for the first time, and on the other, she warmly welcomed her senior teammate Harmanpreet Kaur's brilliant performance. In the first match of the first-ever bilateral women's ODI series between India and Zimbabwe, India posted a strong score of 328/6, powered by Harmanpreet Kaur's century and Deepti Sharma's unbeaten hundred.
The start of the match was not good at all for India. Batting first after losing the toss, the Indian team suffered a major blow in the very first over when captain Smriti Mandhana was dismissed after playing a mistimed shot. Shortly after, opener Shafali Verma was also caught at mid-wicket and returned to the pavilion. With both openers dismissed cheaply, pressure mounted on the team, but the middle order held firm and pulled the team out of trouble.
During this phase, Pratika Rawal played a fine innings of 61 runs off 67 balls and shared a 124-run partnership with Harmanpreet Kaur. This partnership proved to be the backbone for the team. After Pratika's dismissal, Harmanpreet held one end and, along with Deepti Sharma, took the attack to the Zimbabwe bowlers. The two shared a massive 153-run partnership that took India towards a big total.
Harmanpreet Kaur scored her eighth ODI century in this match. She reached her century off 101 balls and remained unbeaten till the end, scoring 126 runs off 121 balls. Her innings showcased excellent cover drives and cut shots. When Harmanpreet completed her century, Smriti Mandhana, sitting in the dressing room, jumped with joy and gave her a standing ovation with applause. This scene reflects the unity and positive atmosphere within the team, where the new captain is heartily honouring the performance of the former captain.
However, Harmanpreet's innings also included some luck. Zimbabwe's fielding was poor and they dropped three catches of Harmanpreet, which she capitalised on to build a big score. Moreover, she added 26 runs off the final 20 balls, reflecting her strategy of aggressive batting in the late innings.
On the other hand, Deepti Sharma also batted brilliantly, hitting an unbeaten 106 off 86 balls. Her strike rate was around 123, which clearly shows her aggressive intent. Deepti has been emerging as a fine all-rounder for some time, and this innings is proof of her batting ability.
For Zimbabwe, Nomvelo Sibanda took two wickets, proving to be their most successful bowler. The Indian team recovered from early jolts to reach 328, which is considered a strong score in women's ODI cricket. This score was mainly the result of the middle order's hard work, as the top order was almost completely unsuccessful.
This match also has historical significance, as it is the first bilateral women's series between India and Zimbabwe. This is a rare opportunity for Zimbabwe to play against a top-tier side, which is important for the development of their cricket. For the Indian team, this series is a platform to test combinations and try new players under new captain Smriti Mandhana.
Mandhana's first match as captain should have started with a win, but while evaluating this, it is important to note that the opponent team was weak. Because of the top-order failure and the luck India received against Zimbabwe, this win should not be seen as a very big achievement. The real test will come when the Indian team plays against stronger opponents.
Overall, this match became a symbol of experienced Harmanpreet's batting ability and the unity of the team under new captain Smriti Mandhana's leadership. The scene of standing and applauding in the dressing room presents a picture of the positive atmosphere in Indian women's cricket in the times to come. Now it remains to be seen how this series progresses and what the Indian team learns from it.
